The Art of Negotiating

Posted by Melinda Morgan on Friday, April 24th, 2009 at 3:07am.

I think I might have an addiction to negotiating. I just don’t feel satisfied unless I’ve negotiated at least 1X a day. J I enjoy getting deals but I’m not the hunter type. I generally don’t shop the clearance racks and I’m not that into discount shops. Yes. I do shop at Walmart for some things - their price for babyfood is unmatchable. But Macy’s and Nordstrom are more to my liking as far as clothes and shoes are concerned. You can’t help but walk through and find a shirt or entire outfit on display and fall in love. So how does one get discounts on premium items? Using the art (or is it science?) of negotiation of course.negotiating_tactic_400 Did you know you can negotiate prices at regular department stores?... I didn’t either until I tried it one day. I was in need of my negotiating fix and happen to be shopping at Macy’s (Meier and Frank at the time). Mind you I just had my first baby and perhaps (admittedly) might have been slightly hormonal. I needed some new clothes. I was in that yucky in-between stage. For the mom’s out there – you know, that stage where you aren’t back to your before baby size but you can’t bear another day in your maternity clothes. Yeah, and I wasn’t feeling particularly happy about spending money on clothes I hoped wouldn’t be fitting me for very long. So when it came time to pay and my bill was added up (around $300) I was thinking are you kidding? So I asked the clerk if she had any coupons I could use. Answer: no. Did she know when the next sale was going to happen? Answer: No. So I kindly let her know that this was adding up to a pretty big sale for her (most clerks are on some commission % split) and that I felt I deserved at least a 10% discount. Answer: I don’t think we can do that. My reply back: Sweetheart please check with your manager and tell her that I am requesting a 10% discount. She’ll give you the okay I said with a smile and bogus confidence. The clerk came back shocked -and yes, I got my discount. Friends, I’ve since pulled similar tactics at Nordstrom and was just as successful. Lesson learned: EVERYTHING is negotiable and my mantra since high school helped as well, “Never accept a no from someone who does not have the authority to give you a yes”.  –Melinda Morgan How does this story relate to real estate? It doesn’t really. It’s after midnight and I felt like sharing. But hey, if you know anyone that wants to get a good price on a house they buy or to get the best price for their home for sale I love to negotiate. I would be honored to help your friend or family member out. Even if they want to buy/sell on their own (unrepresented) – I’m open to talking with them and giving them some pointers for a better buy/sell experience!
