Smooth Move -7 tips to help your kids adjust to a move
Posted by Melinda Morgan on Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 at 5:19pm.- Allow your child(ren) to help with packing. By allowing your child to pack at least one box, it gives them a sense of control as well as helps mentally prepare them for the move. This can be from their own room and perhaps a combination of their favorite things that they can’t live without. The box shouldn’t be too large. Some kids assume when they move all their cherished belongings stay with the old house. Assure them you will make sure everything else gets packed up and moved as well.
- Talk about the new place. Once you know where you’re moving to, start talking about it with the kids. Don’t make anything a mystery and this isn’t the time to “surprise” them. Give them all the details. Show them pictures if you have them. Talk about their room and the cool new school they will get to go to, etc.
- Get them something special for their room. A new bedspread, a whole new bedroom décor or something as simple as an inexpensive new decoration or bed pillow. That extra something will help lift spirits once they are in their new place and make this new place even more special.
- Something that says, “I’m Home”. Whether it’s their bed, computer, or video game. Once you arrive at the new place, make this the first thing you set-up. Give them a sense of being “home” again right away.
- Have comfort items readily available. Whether it’s their special bear, blankie or favorite toy. Don’t let it get packed away so that it takes days or weeks to find.
- Allow them to check out the neighborhood. Even if it’s only looking online. Drive by the neighborhood. Do it in the afternoon when your child might have a better chance of seeing other children in the neighborhood. Park for a few minutes and allow them time to check out the surroundings. Get out and walk around. If this is not possible then technology is your friend. Allow your child to go to Google maps and do a Street view and Birdseye view of the place. This is a great way to familiarize them with the new area.
- Host a party. Once you’ve moved in, create an opportunity for your child(ren) to meet other kids in the neighborhood. One fun idea would be to host a “Back to School Breakfast” in your garage or driveway. Invite neighborhood kids (and parents) to a pancake breakfast the day before school starts.

Hope these tips help you and those you love. Remember, if you’re buying or selling a home and you seek a child-friendly Realtor, as a mom of two energetic boys, I will make sure everyone’s needs are met.
